When should I start brushing my child’s teeth?

As a Southfield, MI pediatric dentist, we are asked this question on a regular basis and the answer is always – as soon as they have any.  In fact, you can begin to brush your child’s gums while they are teething.  To do so, grab a clean wash rag, dampen it with warm water and gently rub the milk off of your child’s gums.  As they grow, use an age-appropriate toothbrush and toothpaste.

How soon should I bring my child to a pediatric dentist?

You can bring your child in for an exam and a dental cleaning at one year of age.

What happens at a dental cleaning?

At City Centre Dental, we realize that it is sometimes necessary to let the child set the pace.  This means that your child will often determine how much is done at their first appointment.  Typically, we begin by examining their teeth and as long as they are comfortable, we will complete a dental cleaning.  To do so, we will use a special abrasive paste that allows us to deep clean their teeth.  If necessary, we will also use a dental tool in order to scrape off any built up plaque and tartar.  Then, we will floss their teeth to remove any plaque from in between their teeth and gums.

Will my child receive any other preventative treatments?

When visiting our 48075 dental office, your child may also benefit from additional preventative care.  In many cases, we will recommend a fluoride treatment that can be used to strengthen their teeth.

What is fluoride and why is it used?

Fluorine is a naturally occurring mineral that, when placed on the teeth, is absorbed by the enamel and used to strengthen it.  Fluoride has been proven to reduce the likelihood of cavities forming by thirty percent which is why we recommend it as a kid friendly dentist.

What is dental sealant and why is it used?

We use dental sealant in order to seal the deep ridges on the chewing surfaces of the teeth.  When these ridges exist, it becomes easy for food and plaque to become trapped in between them. This can lead to tooth decay and infections so to prevent this, we will apply a plastic-like substance to the surface of the teeth – dental sealant. The process is fast and easy, making it possible for even young children to sit through it.

Will my child feel pain when they visit the dentist?

Not if you bring your child to a kid friendly dentist.  At City Centre Dental, we know how to treat children, we are a gentle dentist, and can ensure that they remain comfortable the entire time they are here.

How do I schedule an appointment with your pediatric dentist office?
